Being let into someone's home is a responsibility we take seriously. Every lockout starts with a polite check that you belong there, every rekey ends with the old pins handed back, and every job is done as if our own family lived behind that door.

From the shop

Old locks respected, new locks fitted right.

A gate, a shed, a detached garage, a mailbox at the end of the drive: outdoor hardware lives a harder life than anything on the house. Rain gets in, frost locks it up, and sun fades the finish. We choose cylinders and padlocks built for the weather, mount them so water drains rather than pools, and key them to match the house where that makes sense.

  • Options laid out side by sideRepair, rekey, replace or upgrade, with what each involves and what it changes. You pick; we do not steer you toward the biggest job.
  • Finished, not nearly finishedEvery key tested in every lock, every screw tight, every strike aligned, and the packaging in our van rather than your bin.

Locksmith services

Our services at a glance

Security should feel like a settled question, not a nagging one. These services exist to get you there: doors that lock without a wrestle, keys that only the right people hold, and hardware chosen for how you actually use the building rather than a catalogue picture.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

A door that refuses to open is one problem; a door that refuses to close is another, and often the more pressing one. The emergency pages cover both, including temporary bracing and board-up when the frame or glass needs a proper repair later.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Rekeying, deadbolt installation, lock replacement, smart locks, mailbox locks, mortise lock servicing and gate hardware each have a residential page here. Every one is written for the person who lives behind the door, not for another locksmith.

  1. Hands holding a lock cylinder and a ring of keys above a worn workbench with another cylinder and loose keys. — Lock Rekeying, Richmond Hill
Lock RekeyingYour basement tenant has given notice, and a new one arrives on the first. The lock on the separate entrance works perfectly well.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Richmond Hill
Deadbolt InstallationYou bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is…
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Richmond Hill
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe century home's original mortise lock takes a key the size of a spoon, sticks in humid weather and has worn its strike to a groove. You want a lock that works every day without giving up the old door.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Richmond Hill
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe interior bedroom doors on the second floor have the original mortise latches, and none of them close any more. The doors drift open, the small brass turn buttons do nothing, and the keyholes have been empty for as…
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Richmond Hill
Smart Lock InstallationHalf the evenings someone asks whether the back door got locked, and nobody is sure. A lock that relocks on its own, shows its state in an app and reports when it was last opened would settle the question.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Richmond Hill
Gate & Building Entry LocksA visitor buzzes from the panel downstairs, someone presses the button by the door, and nothing happens. The electric strike on the lobby door used to click open on cue; now it stays silent, and residents are propping…
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Richmond Hill
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe property manager mentioned that half the compartments in the lobby's mailbox panel are original to the building and are starting to fail one by one, key by key, as tenants turn over year after year.

Commercial

Commercial Locks

Business owners usually want two things from us: to know exactly who can open which door, and to stop worrying about it. The services here, from rekeying to full access control, are different ways of getting to that point.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

A roommate moved out on bad terms and says the key was left on the counter. It was not. You have already changed the Wi-Fi password, but the front door still opens for a key that could be anywhere.

How a visit goes

Sometimes the reason is simply that the hardware looks wrong or has weathered badly. Road salt, freeze-thaw and humid summers are hard on finishes, and a brass handleset can go blotchy while a lacquered knob peels.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Planning the levels

Together we list the doors, then decide who should open everything, who should open a floor and who should open one room. That structure becomes the keying chart.

  2. 2 of 3

    Pinning to the chart

Every cylinder is pinned so the right keys work and nothing else does. We check each combination against the chart as we go, not at the end.

  3. 3 of 3

    Delivering keys and the record

You receive the keys labelled by level, the chart and a plain explanation of how to add a door or retire a key later without redoing the whole system.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 15%Newer homes

About 15% of homes in Richmond Hill were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Builders often key an entire street to a small number of keyways, which is convenient for them and less so for owners afterwards. In newer areas a locksmith can move a household onto a keyway that is genuinely its own.

  • 57%

Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Richmond Hill (2021 Census).

In mixed neighbourhoods, a family may move from an apartment to a house or the other way around. A locksmith who knows both kinds of door can rekey the old place for the next occupant and set up the new one on the same visit.

What does a higher grade of lock actually give me?

Grades follow ANSI/BHMA standards, with Grade 1 the highest and Grade 3 the lightest, and residential hardware carries a separate label that scores security, durability and finish. The grade reports how the lock performed on the standard's own operational, strength and security tests; a higher grade often comes with a longer bolt, a sturdier housing, pins that resist picking and a strike built to anchor into the framing, but those features are worth confirming on the specific model rather than assumed from the grade alone.

My deadbolt only locks if I push the door. Will a new lock cure that?

The push is a sign the bolt and the strike pocket are out of line, which is a door and frame matter more than a lock fault. A new deadbolt is welcome if the old one is worn, but the visit also adjusts the strike, deepens the pocket or tightens hinges so the bolt throws freely with the door simply closed. Done together, the door locks with a fingertip and the new hardware works as designed.

How long does a lock replacement take?

A straightforward like-for-like deadbolt or knob set on a standard door is often a matter of an hour or less including testing. Add time for a reinforced strike, for keying several locks alike and cutting keys, for a smart lock's setup and pairing, and for repairing a split jamb or adapting an older door. When several entrances are done together, the locksmith gives a realistic window before starting so you can plan the day.

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most.
